San Juan Vineyards, 2008 Afterglow

A note from the winemaker, Chris J Primus: East meets West in this unique wine, a blend of 63% Madeleine Angevine from our Estate vineyard and 22% Cabernet Franc, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Sangiovese from Eastern Washington. Just over half of the Madeleine Angevine was co-fermented with juice from the red grapes. The red juice gained its color by sitting on its skins for two to three days after destemming. These juice blends were fermented in six neutral red French oak barrels using three different kinds of yeasts. Upon completing fermentation, the wine was racked to a stainless steel tank. I added the rest of the Madeleine Angevine from a separate stainless steel tank fermentation to balance the wine. The aromas remind me of a fresh fruit salad made with strawberries, peaches and oranges that are sitting a slate bowl. In the mouth, the mid-palate overflows with fresh red berry flavors and the clean acid finish has a peppery spice. Only 206 cases were bottled!
