Our Story

Founded in 1934, Chateau Ste. Michelle is the oldest winery in Washington state with some of the most mature vineyards in the Columbia Valley. The winery combines an ongoing dedication to research with a commitment to classic winemaking traditions and is best known for award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Led by winemaker Bob Bertheau, Chateau Ste. Michelle’s portfolio includes Columbia Valley wines styled to bring out the varietal character of the region; Single Vineyard wines that epitomize the terroir of the estate vineyards; Ethos, the ultimate winemaker expression; and Artist Series, a Bordeaux-style blend crafted for power and longevity.

Chateau Ste. Michelle owns 3,500 acres of vineyards in the Columbia Valley of Eastern Washington, including renowned vineyards of Canoe Ridge Estate and Cold Creek. Recognized not only as a pioneer of vinifera grape growing in the Columbia Valley, Chateau Ste. Michelle is acknowledged today as a leader in modern day viticultural research and sustainability. In the fall of 2009, Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Cold Creek and Canoe Ridge Estate vineyards earned third party sustainable certification for LIVE and Salmon Safe.

Located in Woodinville, Washington, 15 miles northeast of Seattle, Chateau Ste. Michelle winery sits on an 87-acre estate once home to Seattle lumber baron Frederick Stimson. The winery’s expansive, scenic grounds make an excellent picnic site. Complimentary guided tours and tastings are offered daily from 11 am to 5 pm. Reserve, single vineyard and library wines are available for tasting for a modest fee by appointment (call 425-488-4633). The winery also hosts monthly Chef dinners, wine and cheese nights and other special events. During the summer, the winery is home to a popular outdoor concert series.
