It appears that June has finally brought us summer. Temperatures have steadily increased and the vines have loved every second of it. Soaking up the much-needed heat, they have put on the perfect amount of growth.
June has also been a very busy month at Tsillan Cellars. The vineyard crew finished suckering and shoot-thinning the vines just in time for bloom (also know as flowering). With 14 different varietals across our vineyard, we are in all different stages of bloom and fruit set. For example, our Riesling has completed bloom and has fruit set, but our Cabernet Sauvignon is still in full bloom. Exciting times at Tsillan Cellars, but let’s focus our attention on something a little more important this month.
As I mentioned in my first article, our crew is the backbone of vineyard operations, without them tending to the vines daily we couldn’t grow the high quality of grapes we do. I had also said I wanted to spend some time throughout the year getting to know them. My goal with this is to shine the light on the people behind the scenes of Tsillan Cellars, without them none of what makes TC special would be possible. I have chosen June to conduct my first interview of one of our most important crew members.
Donanciano Servin is Tsillan Cellars Vineyard Foreman, he is responsible for overseeing all other crew members and all vineyard tasks. Don is an extremely hard worker and is usually the first one here and last to leave. Don is our “multi-tool”–there is not one job he can’t perform. Big or small, he can do them all. Don wouldn’t ask the crew to do anything that he isn’t willing to do. That’s what makes him such a good leader. Don makes my job easy and it’s truly an honor to work with him. I recently had a chance to sit down with Don and Tsillan Cellars General Manager Bob Hargadon and do a video interview. Special thanks to Bob for conducting the interview in Spanish.
