Compared to the 2021, the 2022 vintage is off to a completely opposite start.
The start of the 2021 vintage was warm to hot and quite dry. Temperatures continued to climb until they reached an all-time high in late June of 114.1 degrees F. Although bud break was a little uneven the warm temperatures throughout May helped the young shoots catch up and grow at an even pace.
Our current vintage has seen cold and wet conditions, not as favorable to growing grapes as last year. Temperatures are well below the average and continue to trend in that direction. These conditions have led to a delay in the growing season. Due to the colder than average spring, bud break at Tsillan Cellars was delayed, and so was the growth of the shoots. The early growth that did occur was halted by continuous cold temperatures and rainy days. The rare few days in May the vines have been greeted with temperatures in the low 70’s, the vines have sucked up every last ray of sunshine. Every time the shoots get some heat to grow, they are quickly subdued by the next cold snap.
Although the cold has slowed the development of the vines, it has not completely stopped them. Grapevines are survivors they want to grow and inch by inch they are creeping upwards towards the sky. The shoots have reached a length that allows us to begin shoot thinning. Shoot thinning is the first of many canopy management decisions we will make during this growing season. Shoot thinning is done by removing the less fruitful or unfruitful and unwanted shoots. This helps us control the crop load and opens the canopy up to increase airflow and reduces disease pressure. Our crew does this all by hand, vine by vine. Its meticulous work, but they take it very seriously and do it with pride. We will continue this process over and over again until the entire vineyard has been completed. Once completed the crew will move on to the next equally important task, but we will talk about that next time. Until then hope for warm sunny days that will bring much needed heat to the vines.
